From November 25 to 27, the historic city of Assisi became a global hub for innovation, as Fondazione SAFE organized the Hackathon Tech for SHRINEs, a flagship event of the SHRINEs Project. This unique event brought together over 150 experts, including innovators, religious leaders, and key stakeholders, to develop and showcase solutions for protecting sacred spaces.

Key Achievements of the Hackathon

  • 11 innovation teams presented advanced solutions to 10 evaluators and 10+ potential investors.
  • Engagement with 8 religious groups, fostering interfaith collaboration.
  • Contributions from 25+ keynote speakers, offering insights on resilience, security, and cultural preservation.
  • 3 thematic workshops addressed critical challenges in safeguarding sacred spaces.

The event was more than a competition—it was a testament to the power of collaboration and shared purpose. By integrating technology and spirituality, the Hackathon highlighted innovative ways to protect cultural heritage and uphold sacred values.

The Hackathon culminated in a public event at the Centro Congressi della Basilica di San Francesco, where the four winning teams were recognized for their outstanding achievements. Their solutions exemplify the creativity, dedication, and innovation that are central to the SHRINEs Project.

SHRINEs: building a safer future

The SHRINEs Project is a multidisciplinary effort supported by a €1.5 million EU grant over 24 months. Under the leadership of Fondazione SAFE, the project unites Catholic, Jewish, Islamic, and Protestant communities with private companies, academic institutions, and law enforcement to develop practical and sustainable solutions. By fostering interfaith dialogue and leveraging advanced technologies, SHRINEs not only strengthens the resilience of sacred spaces but also contributes to the broader goal of protecting public and cultural heritage.
