On March 4-5, 2025, the MoSaiC Project Management Committee (PMC) convened for its fifth meeting since the project’s launch in January 2023. Hosted at the ENEA facilities in Frascati, Italy, the meeting was a crucial opportunity for consortium partners to review project advancements, address potential challenges, and define the next steps in the development of the MoSaiC solution.
SAFE’s role in MoSaiC project
As the project coordinator, Fondazione SAFE plays a central role in overseeing the management, quality control, and communication activities of the project. SAFE acts as the primary liaison with the European Commission and the supporting Ministries of Defence of Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, and The Netherlands.
One of SAFE’s most strategic contributions is providing its dedicated testing and training facility, where MoSaiC’s validation sessions are conducted in a realistic, semi-controlled environment. These sessions are essential for refining the project’s technological solutions and ensuring they meet the rigorous demands of real-world CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) threat detection and response.
Key takeaways from the meeting
The two-day meeting in Frascati allowed consortium members to:
- Evaluate project progress & achievements: discussions centered around key milestones, current advancements, and the implementation of MoSaiC’s solutions.
- Plan for the upcoming months: the team outlined next steps, including an updated validation schedule and discussions on a potential project extension.
- Prepare for the first validation session: final refinements were made to the validation plan, which will take place in April 2025 at SAFE’s facility in Calvarina. The validation will follow a phased approach: first iteration – testing of individual components -; second iteration – integration of components into a full system, -.
- Visit ENEA’s Laboratories: consortium members had the opportunity to examine MoSaiC sensors installed at ENEA’s Frascati center and evaluate additional technologies contributed by project partner CREO.
These activities have set a solid foundation for the next phases of the project, ensuring that all partners remain aligned on MoSaiC’s objectives and implementation timeline.
The significance of MoSaiC project for Fondazione SAFE
At SAFE, we are committed to enhancing security and resilience through innovation and collaboration. MoSaiC aligns perfectly with our mission by developing cutting-edge solutions for real-time C-B threat detection and response.
The MoSaiC solution is designed to provide security forces, first responders, , and crisis management teams with:
- Real-time threat monitoring capabilities
- Advanced detection, identification, and monitoring (DIM) technologies
- Next-generation command-and-control (C2) solutions
- Virtual Reality (VR) visualization tools for enhanced situational awareness
By integrating miniaturized sensors, innovative sampling techniques, and AI-driven data processing, MoSaiC has the potential to revolutionize C-B crisis response, providing faster, more effective, and highly coordinated solutions for emergency situations.
As the coordinator of this ambitious EU-funded project, SAFE is proud to lead this consortium of top-tier research institutions, technology companies, and defense agencies in shaping the future of security technologies.
