As a partner of the Cluster CBRN P3, SAFE participated in the conference “Global Security and CBRN Risk Protection” held at ENEA HQ in Rome on the 11th of December 2019.
The conference focused on the new and old CBRN threats and actors in the modern fast-changing environment and, the need for cooperation and coordination, in particular from the institutions.
As a matter of fact, in a fast-changing environment, CBRN precursors are now accessible to a multiplicity of actors thus representing a potential threat. These threats are becoming more and more difficult to be identified due to their interdisciplinary nature and unpredictable users. As an example, synthetic biology could be seen as the new hacking, as said by Mr Barbareschi from WHO.
Preparedness was the keyword emerged from the conference in responding to the threats; it is fundamental to proceed in parallel with technological advancement. In addition, interoperability, support and coordination represent the vital factors needed in this equation; particularly, this support should come from the institutional leaders. To ensure the preparedness, Major Santini, from Joint NBC School of Rieti, highlighted the importance of assisting the planning of responding to an emergency through the training as well as the importance of including in the process universities and private sector.
Through the participation in this conference, SAFE furtherly strengthened its active role within the CBRN p3 cluster and in promoting security and freedom for Europe.
